                                                                                                                                                               Issue 140
Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

When does an innovation like the air taxi hit the tipping point? As it moves from innovative to mainstream.

The most popular travel magazine in the world, Conde Nast Traveler, has nominated as one of its award finalists an air taxi company. This nomination is alongside giants for the magazine's 2009 innovation and design awards for aviation. Blink Air Taxi is competing against companies like Emirates, Air New Zealand, Qantas, and Boeing. So through April 23, the voting can be done as many times as you like by yourself and by colleagues at http://cntraveller.com/promotions/idawards2009/. Just make sure to vote in all 10 categories so your vote counts. While we would extend the same encouragement to vote for any air taxi company, the enthusiasm for an air taxi win against industry giants would be all the more incredible.

Best regards,

Joe Leader
President, Air Taxi Association (ATXA)

Grim Prospects - Deep Recession, Bigger Losses

IATA

Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced a revised outlook for the global air transport industry with losses of US$4.7 billion in 2009. This is significantly worse than IATA’s December forecast for a US$2.5 billion loss in 2009, reflecting the rapid deterioration of the global economic conditions.

Industry revenues are expected to fall by 12.0%* (US$62 billion) to US$467 billion. By comparison, the previous revenue decline, after the events of 11 September 2001, saw industry revenues fall by US$23 billion over the period of 2000 to 2002 (approximately 7.0%**).

Jet-Alliance Offers Plan for DayJet Eclipse 500s

Matt Thurber, AIN Online

While various entrepreneurs have tried to buy and resell the 28 Eclipse 500 very light jets that were flown by bankrupt air-taxi firm DayJet, none has succeeded. Now Randall Sanada, chairman of aircraft charter and management firm Jet-Alliance of Westlake Village, Calif., has proposed a new way to market those jets, still owned by UT Finance, a subsidiary of United Technologies.

Jet-Alliance plans to offer to sell shares of used DayJet Eclipse 500s to those who placed 60-percent deposits on new Eclipse 500s. “As unsecured creditors,” Sanada said, “there’s really nothing for them except perhaps a small percentage they might recover through litigation.

Eclipse Jet Enlists Eclipse Aviation's Roel Piper

AVweb

"Roel [Pieper] reluctantly took over as CEO of Eclipse in July of 2008," according to a press release that now announces him as a partner with Mike Press, Mason Holland, Raul Segredo and John Cracken in Eclipse Jet LLC (a.k.a. New Eclipse) -- a company that seeks to acquire and operate the assets of Eclipse Aviation. Pieper, who succeeded Vern Raburn as Eclipse's CEO, found himself unable to fund his plan to turn the financially failing Eclipse Aviation around as the economy collapsed. But, says Holland, he has engaged himself with Eclipse Jet in a way that "proved very useful."

In the midst of one of the deepest economic downturns the GA industry has seen, Cessna's Jack Pelton says that perception as much as dismal market conditions threaten the industry's recovery. Speaking at the 51st Aircraft Electronics Association convention in Dallas Thursday, Pelton said Cessna has determined to take a leadership role in an unapologetic campaign to reestablish the legitimacy of GA as a critical business tool. "We've got to make it clear that it's OK to fly," Pelton told the opening session of AEA. Click here to listen to AVweb's podcast with Pelton.

NextGen ATC: The future is ... a.) now b.) tomorrow c.) 2025 d.) never e.) all of the above

Elliot Borin, AirTaxiFlights.com

"NextGen."

It is, to begin with, something of a misnomer.
The implication is futuristic, something out there somewhere, beyond a distant not-quite-visible horizon. Maybe not exactly as far removed from this day's ToDo List as figuring out how to refreezing the polar ice caps after their globally warmed meltdown, but still pretty well down the road.

Robert Goyer, Flying Magazine Online

We fly the latest SR22 from Cirrus Aircraft and try out its long list of phenomenally cool safety features.

Cirrus Aircraft has introduced its lineup for 2009, and the new airplanes come with some very impressive available features. The big news is a known ice protection system, but there's a raft of other recently announced upgrades, too, with a whole host of advanced acronyms available, EVS, SVT and FIKI, among many others, making the SR22, for the time being, the most technologically sophisticated production piston single-engine airplane in the world, by a nose.
